Bengaluru, 21st August 2023 : Nrityakosh, an oriental and fusion belly dance school, presents ‘Parikrama’, a dance showcase of 10 Middle Eastern Dance Styles and a lecture demonstration. The event will take place on Saturday, September 2nd at the Shoonya Centre for Arts and Somatic Practices.
‘Parikrama’ will bring forth the history, cultural significance, socio-political influences, and the music of 10 distinct Middle Eastern Dance Styles. These dance forms, when woven together, create the enchanting fabric of Oriental Dance, commonly known as “Belly Dance”. The performers will serve as both guides and educators, leading the audience on a journey through the diverse and unique languages of dance. Live music will accompany the performances, offering a never seen before experience for the audience to delve deeper into the world of middle eastern dance, music and culture!
Conceptualized and Choreographed by Debapriya Das, Parikrama is the first performance of its kind in Bengaluru in the field of Belly Dance. Over the last several years, Debapriya and her dance institute ‘Nrityakosh’ has been curating and producing socially, culturally, and politically relevant shows that blend storytelling with Oriental Dance. They foster inclusivity by offering belly dancing classes for people of all ages and genders, creating a space for learning and growth. Moreover, Nrityakosh is actively shaping belly dancing into a viable professional career through a structured format. By introducing individuals to various avenues within the field, it encourages them to view belly dancing as more than just a hobby but as a potential career path. Through its efforts, Nrityakosh empowers individuals to explore and embrace the professional opportunities available in the world of Belly dancing.
Debapriya is trained in a myriad of dance styles ranging from Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Ballet, Flamenco and contemporary dance. She was introduced to Belly Dance in 2012 and since then there has been no looking back. She instantly fell in love with the art form and made an effort to train with the best artists in the field and expand her knowledge in the dance vocabulary of Middle Eastern folk and classical formats and its fusion formats.
