Bengaluru, November 17, 2025. The ninth edition of the Kerala Literature Festival (KLF), widely recognized as Asia’s largest and the world’s most attended literary festival, is set to take place from January 22 to 25, 2026, on the scenic Kozhikode beachfront. Kozhikode, recently designated as India’s first UNESCO City of Literature, provides a fitting backdrop for this massive cultural congregation.
Since its launch in 2016, KLF has rapidly ascended to become one of India’s most anticipated cultural events, evolving into a holistic space where literature, ideas, art, music, cinema, and performance converge. The previous edition alone attracted over 650,000 visitors and featured more than 600 speakers, demonstrating the festival’s enormous and inclusive appeal.
The announcement for the 2026 edition was made during a successful pre-event showcase in Bengaluru on November 17, 2025. This event was part of a dedicated campaign titled ‘An Event Beyond Words,’ aimed at promoting the festival among marketing and advertising professionals, business influencers, and brand owners. The campaign underscores KLF’s value not just as a literary event, but as a major cultural and intellectual platform.
The KLF 2026 edition promises to be the most dynamic yet, significantly broadening the spectrum of voices and experiences to reflect the complex and evolving global landscape of thought and creativity.
Over the four days, the festival will host over 400 speakers from around the world and feature 250 sessions. These sessions will be spread across seven parallel tracks, with approximately ten sessions running on each track every day. Attendees can expect a diverse presence, with participants from 15 countries contributing to the extensive program. The days will be packed with engaging discussions, transforming Kozhikode into a veritable “city of ideas,” followed by spectacular evening performances and musical events right on the beach.
This expansive format will feature a remarkable assembly of global luminaries, including:
- Nobel Laureates: Abdulrazak Gurnah, Olga Tokarczuk, and Abhijit Banerjee.
- Business Leaders & Icons: Olympian Ben Johnson and business leader Indra Nooyi.
- Writers, Economists, and Intellectuals: Economist Arvind Subramanian, linguist and author Peggy Mohan, author and columnist Shobhaa De, writer and former diplomat Amish Tripathi, writer and journalist Deepa Bhasthi, writer and activist Banu Mushtaq, and writer Gabriela Ybarra.
- Artists and Performers: Actor and singer Piyush Mishra, artist and illustrator Cheyenne Olivier, and curator Helen Molesworth.
The conversations will fluidly bridge genres and disciplines, spanning fiction and non-fiction, politics and history, folklore and contemporary culture, and science and philosophy. This reflects the festival’s core ethos: that the open exchange of ideas is the most potent catalyst for creativity.
Ravi Deecee, Chief Facilitator of the Kerala Literature Festival, commented on the festival’s trajectory: “KLF has evolved into a platform where literature and art coexist with science, cinema, and social thought. Every year, it becomes a meeting point for some of the most creative and courageous minds from around the world. The 2026 edition will continue this journey by deepening the exchange of ideas and celebrating cultural diversity.” He added, “KLF has always stood for accessibility and openness. It allows conversations that connect people across languages, disciplines, and borders, reinforcing Kerala’s place on the global cultural map.”
Adding a significant international dimension to the 2026 proceedings, Germany has been officially announced as the Guest Nation for KLF. This collaboration promises a vibrant programme showcasing diverse German literary, artistic, and cultural expressions.
Dr. Michael Heinst, Director of Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Bangalore, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership: “Germany shares a close cultural relationship with Kerala and we are excited to reaffirm this relationship through our programming for Kerala Literature Festival. As the Guest Nation of KLF 2026, the German participation will feature a dedicated pavilion, a writing residency in Vagamon for German writers as well as a Creative Writing Workshop for young creatives writing in Malayalam.”
Working in concert with the German Consulate in Bangalore and the Goethe-Zentrum in Trivandrum, German authors and artists will be brought to the warm sands of Kozhikode beach.
The German presence will include a dedicated pavilion that highlights the nation’s contemporary literature, art, and creative industries, offering attendees a closer look at modern German cultural identity. A stunning light installation on Kozhikode Beach will serve as a visual centrepiece, powerfully symbolizing the spirit of cross-cultural exchange and global collaboration that KLF fosters. Through curated sessions, exhibitions, and performances, the German contingent will engage in meaningful dialogues with Indian writers, artists, and audiences on themes of literature, translation, art, and shared creative values.
This prestigious Guest Nation collaboration follows the successful participation of France in the previous year, further cementing KLF’s standing as a truly global cultural platform that actively seeks diversity and builds international connections.
An Immersive Cultural Experience
KLF 2026 maintains its commitment to providing immersive cultural experiences that seamlessly blend literary discussions with live performance.
Over the four days, the Kozhikode beachfront will be transformed into a vibrant hub for community interaction, art, and the celebration of ideas. Alongside the intellectually stimulating day sessions, the evenings will offer an equally engaging cultural feast. The line-up includes fusion nights, concerts, traditional and contemporary art showcases, and theatre performances that highlight the rich artistic diversity of Kerala and beyond. The unique beachfront setting enhances the festival’s charm, creating a welcoming, open-air atmosphere for people to read, listen, and celebrate creativity in every imaginable form.
As anticipation mounts, Kozhikode prepares once again to welcome a kaleidoscope of voices, stories, and audiences from every corner of the world. The Kerala Literature Festival 2026 is poised to transform the city into a vibrant, four-day living celebration of creativity and human connection.
