Dr. Neeraja Leads BlackRock's Exit from People Tree for Mental Health Expansion - thisweekindia

BENGALURU, November 24, 2025 — Dr. Jothi Neeraja, Founder, Managing Director, and CEO of People Tree Hospitals, has commenced the exit process for BlackRock’s significant ₹210 crore ($24 million) investment made in March of this year. This move honors her commitment to investor trust, following BlackRock’s first major hospital investment in India.

A distinguished first-generation entrepreneur and Obstetrician-Gynecologist, Dr. Neeraja built the 300+ bed People Tree network on a foundation of ethical, affordable care, transparency, and rigorous financial governance.

Her proven track record includes:

  • Successfully facilitating early exits for 78 investors.
  • Providing a timely exit for Infosys Co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan’s family office.
  • Being entrusted with BlackRock’s inaugural hospital investment in India.

A New Mission: Tackling India’s Mental Health Crisis

With the People Tree transition underway, Dr. Neeraja is now shifting her focus to Maarga Mind Care. Her bold new goal is to scale a 1,000-bed network across 25 dedicated mental health hospitals to address India’s severe 70–90% mental health treatment gap.

“India has built world-class super specialty care in Cardiology, Oncology, and Neurosciences,” Dr. Neeraja states. “Our next decade must belong to mental health with the same quality, urgency, and seriousness.”

Dr. Neeraja’s journey—from building an ethical healthcare institution to ensuring timely investor returns and now pioneering a nationwide mental health network—establishes her as a leading figure in purpose-driven healthcare entrepreneurship.
