In an exclusive interview with This Week India, Amit Gupta, promoter of Agrifields DMCC, a Dubai- based fertilizer and phosphate firm talks about partnering with local communities to promote sustainable agriculture, social responsibility, talent management, leadership and much more.
He hails from Kolkata, where he completed his Bachelor of Commerce from St Xavier’s College. He later earned an MBA in entrepreneurship from Australia. Agrifields supplies fertilizers and phosphates globally including India.
Excerpts of the interview:
This Week India: What is your leadership philosophy, and how do you inspire your team to achieve the company’s vision?
Amit Gupta: My leadership philosophy is centred around empowering my team to realise and achieve their full potential. I believe in fostering a culture of innovation, transparency, and accountability. At Agrifields, we prioritize collaboration, open communication, and continuous learning. Our vision is to be a leader in the agrochemical industry, and I inspire my team to achieve this by setting achievable goals, providing necessary resources, recognizing and rewarding outstanding performance.
TWI: Agrifields operates in a highly competitive and dynamic industry. What are some of the biggest challenges you face, and how do you identify opportunities for growth and expansion?
Amit Gupta: The agrochemical industry is highly competitive, and we face challenges such as fluctuating market trends, geo political changes, regulatory changes (tariffs of late), and increasing competition from low-cost producers. However, we also see opportunities for growth and expansion in emerging markets, particularly in Africa and Asia. To identify these opportunities, we conduct thorough market research, engage with local stakeholders, and invest in research and development to stay ahead of the curve.
TWI: As a leader in the agrochemical industry, how does Agrifields approach sustainability and social responsibility? Can you share some initiatives or projects that demonstrate your commitment to these values?
Amit Gupta: At Agrifields, we take our commitment to sustainability and social responsibility seriously. We have implemented various initiatives to reduce our environmental footprint, such as promoting renewable energy sources wherever possible in the value chain, reducing water consumption, and implementing waste management programs. We also partner with local communities to promote sustainable agriculture practices, support smallholder farmers, and provide training and education programs cross geographies.
TWI: Agrifields has a significant presence in various countries. What are your plans for further global expansion, and how do you navigate the complexities of operating in diverse markets?
Amit Gupta: We have a significant presence in various countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Our plans for further global expansion include entering new markets, expanding our product portfolio, and strengthening our distribution network. We navigate the complexities of operating in diverse markets by partnering with local businesses, investing in market research, and adapting our products and services to meet local needs.
TWI: As a leader, how do you approach talent management and development within Agrifields? What initiatives do you have in place to attract, retain, and develop top talent?
Amit Gupta: At Agrifields, we prioritize talent management and development. We have implemented various initiatives to attract, retain, and develop top talent, including training and development programs, mentorship schemes, and performance-based incentives. We also partner with leading universities and research institutions to attract fresh talent and stay ahead of the curve.
TWI: Looking back on your journey as the CEO of Agrifields, what are some of the most important lessons you’ve learned, and how have they shaped your approach to leadership?
Amit Gupta: Looking back on my journey as the CEO of Agrifields, I have learned many valuable lessons. One of the most important lessons is the importance of adaptability and resilience in a rapidly changing business environment. I have also learned the value of investing in people, innovation, and sustainability. These lessons have shaped my approach to leadership, and I continue to prioritize these values in our business strategy.
TWI: Finally, what are your thoughts on the future of the agrochemical industry, and how is Agrifields positioning itself for success in the years to come?
Amit Gupta: The future of the agrochemical industry is exciting and challenging. We see opportunities for growth in emerging markets, sustainable agriculture practices, and precision agriculture solutions. At Agrifields, we are positioning ourselves for success by investing in research and development, expanding our product portfolio, and strengthening our distribution network. ![New Delhi [India], January 9: Visually impaired cricketer and captain of Indian Men’s Cricket Team for the Blind Illuri Ajay Kumar Reddy on Tuesday was conferred with Prestigious Arjuna Award from the President of India at a specially organized function at Rashtrapati Bhavan. National Sports Awards are given every year to recognize and reward excellence in sports. Arjuna Award for outstanding performance in Sports and Games is given for good performance over a period of the previous three years and for showing qualities of leadership, sportsmanship and a sense of discipline. Illuri Ajay Kumar Reddy (Blind Cricket) is among the 26 sportspersons who were honoured with Arjuna Award for outstanding performance in Sports and Games 2023. The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports last month had announced the National Sports Awards 2023. The nominated stars received their awards from the President of India. “I am overwhelmed with this recognition. I dedicate this award to my Parents and Family members for their support. I also would like to thank Cricket Association for the Blind in India (CABI) and all the players with whom I have played,” Ajay Reddy said in a statement. Congratulating Arjuna awardee Dr Mahantesh G Kivadasannavar, Chairman- Cricket Association for the Blind in India (CABI) said “It is an honour and proud moment for all the blind cricketers across the world. It is the good recognition for the hard work and dedication in taking Cricket for the Blind to the next level through various achievements by the Indian Men’s Cricket Team for the blind under the leadership of Ajay Reddy. CABI is happy that cricket for the blind is getting the recognition with other major sports.” Following the Award ceremony, Illuri Ajay Reddy, the chairman of the Cricket Association for the Blind in India (CABI) Dr Mahantesh G Kivadasannavar and CABI secretary Shailender Yadav also met Indian pacer Mohammad Shami. Shami is also among the 26 sportspersons who were honoured with Arjuna Award on Tuesday. Illuri Ajay Reddy is currently working in SBI regional office in Bangalore. He is a B2 category player, who is representing India since 2010. He has been part of winning two ODI World Cups, 3 T20 world cups, 1 Asia Cup. Ajay is the captain of the Indian cricket team for the blind since 2016. Under his captaincy Team India has won 1 ODI world cup, 2 T20 world cups, 1 Asia Cup and the Silver Medal in IBSA World Games and many bilateral and triangular Series. Cricket Association for the Blind in India (CABI) acknowledges the great support received from the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports through this award.
