For the first time, Uttar Pradesh government school students -who have been getting free uniforms and books for long now -will be given free socks and shoes to complete their school look.

The state government hasissued a tender in this regard and will provide two pairs of socks and one pairof shoes to each of the students, officials said. Instructions have been givento distribute the shoes and socks by October 16, 2017.Education departmentauthorities said that as a majority of the students are from poor families andcome to class barefoot, the move would benefit them.

"Students in stategovernment schools from Class I to Class VIII will now get free shoes and socksjust like they have been getting free uniforms. A procedure of e-tendering hasbeen completed and several companies have been shortlisted for different districts.Theamount fixed for a pair of shoes via tendering is Rs 135.75 and for a pair ofsocks is Rs 21.85," the government order issued by Sarvendra VikramBahadur Singh, UP education director (basic) said. The order was issued to allthe district basic shiksha adhikaris.

There are 1.78 crorechildren studying in 1.68 lakh government schools in UP . This includes 1.14lakh primary schools (class I -V) and 54,000 upper primary schools (classVI-VIII). The school uniforms are made available to students after the stategovernment transfers the funds required to block education officers concernedand they get the uniforms stitched. However, the shoes and socks will comedirectly from Lucknow after a count of the number of students and their shoesize is sent to the state authorities.
