Canon India takes a dual leap in its journey of social development
India, April 9th, 2018: - Marking a new milestone on the path of its corporate philosophy – ‘Kyosei’, signifying ‘living and working together for the common good’, imaging leader Canon India, announced the adoption of a new village under its flagship CSR initiative – ‘Adopt a Village’. Through this initiative, the organization has successfully been executing its commitment towards the community, across the country. The new village is adopted in the North region’s Maheshwari Village at Rewari district of Haryana.
Along withthis initiative, Canon India also announces its association with HumanaPeople to People (HPPI), a not-for-profit organization, focused oncommunity development, since last two decades. Its mission is to unite withpeople in India in order to create development in the broadest sense throughthe implementation of the projects that aim at transferring knowledge, skillsand capacity to individuals and communities. HPPI will support Canon’s effortsin the direction of strengthening the social fabric of the country, under its4E’s including Education, Eye Care, Environment and Empowerment.
Commentingon the announcement, Mr. Kazutada Kobayashi, President and CEO, CanonIndia stated, "Our flagship initiative for social development‘Adopt a village’ has witnessed several milestones over the last six years.With our first adopted village in Haryana- Ferozepur Namak reaching aself-sustainable model and the new village Maheshwari joining us, we seecommendable progress in this outreach. Last year, we marked two decades of ourexistence in the country, this glorious milestone has been possible with thesupport of our partners, employees and the community. Our latest initiative inthe direction of social welfare is ‘learning beyond books’, where we will bemaking the children in our adopted villages witness the world outside theirhorizons. With educative trips outside their homes and school boundaries, weaim to help the children aspire more, dream bigger and work harder towardsachieving their dreams. I am optimistic our NGO partner- HPPI, will support usin fulfilling our responsibility.”
The eventwitnessed Mr. Kobayashi’s visit to the village and announcement of the newvillage and the NGO. Children welcomed Canon India employees at the village andperformed on stage, to commemorate the occasion. A tree plantation wasorganized, where 50+ saplings were planted by the Canon India leadership andemployees, seeding the first step towards environment conservation.
Adopt aVillage’s new journey with Maheshwari Village
As part ofthe immediate steps of improvement, Canon India seeks to implement a wide rangeof activities at the school and the village, under its four core focus areas,includingEducation, Eye Care, Environment and Empowerment.
· Education wouldstart with the establishment of a ‘Resource Center’ with learning and playingmaterial accessible to the children. Remedial education will be provided toidentified children in the school, where they would be able to get teachingassistance in the school.
· EyeCare would lead to the establishment of a ‘Vision Center’ to enablefree of cost eye checkups for the villagers and children, under the supervisionof an eye technician. The activities under the domain would also include healthcamps and health related awareness sessions.
· Environment activitieswould involve regular tree plantation drives, quarterly mass scale villagecleanliness drives accompanied with environmental awareness which would beconducted with the involvement of Canon employees. Establishment of kitchengardens, formation of common garbage pits and installation of solar panelswould also be initiated.
· Under Empowerment,digital education, basic and financial literacy and tailoring and designtraining would be provided to identified community members, to supportself-sustainable living. ‘Learning beyond books’ initiative will also witnessits expansion under this ambit.
Like all itsadopted villages, Canon India would be strictly scrutinizing and monitoring theprogress of its endeavors. Apart from Maheshwari, the imaging leader hasadopted following villages across the country, including Sol Gohalia villagenear Kolkata, Maharaja Katte village near Bengaluru and Karanjoti village nearMumbai. All the villages have been identified in close proximity to Canon Indiaoffices in the locations. Employees across the locations regularly visit thechildren in the villages educate them on the importance of health, hygiene andother important aspects of learning which would contribute to their growth anddevelopment. Fun activities like cricket, football tournaments are organizedfor ensuring overall development of the children.
