GAIL workshop to create awareness on Pipeline Safety

Bengaluru, 15th May 2019: GAIL (India) Limited along with GAIL Gas Limited conducted a safety awareness workshop for the GAIL Pipeline in Bengaluru City Gas Distribution Network. The workshop is attended by top State Government officials from Administration, Police, Fire and Safety of Bengaluru, GAIL (India) Limited, GAIL Gas Limited, Infrastructure Players of the City, Civil Amenities bodies like PWD, Water Board, Telecom Operators and Press. Shri P. Murugesan, Executive Director, GAIL (India) Limited presided over the workshop and briefed about the safety measures undertaken for the distribution network system of City Gas.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri P Murugesan said that GAIL Gas Limited is fully geared up to monitor the operation and maintenance of entire network of natural Gas pipeline system on round the clock. GAIL developed major trunk pipeline network along covering entire stretch of Bengaluru wherein there are 22 CNG Stations are planned to refuel the transport vehicles in the city with eight Operational CNG Stations, 12 CNG Stations already mechanically commissioned, and another two CNG Stations are under construction. GAIL Gas Limited, the wholly owned subsidiary of GAIL (India) Limited has laid 1146 Kms of Steel and  MDPE Pipeline in the city, and approximately 11600 Households, 61 Industries and 85 Commercial Units are supplied natural gas. 

Shri Vivek Wathodkar, Chief General Manager, GAIL Gas Limited said that the Company is always committed for the safe operation of the gas pipeline in the city. Of late, however, there has been a rise in different cases of gas leakage due to unauthorized third party interventions of different public utility appointed contractors and agencies which have undertaken digging and excavation works recklessly without permissions or not following safety guidelines. As a standard practice, company installs Safety markers while laying the pipeline with instructions about “Dial before Digging” and conduct line patrolling regularly. He added that there is an utmost need to follow safety guideline before starting any digging activities in the name of public utility services. 

In addition to that GAIL Gas is conducting exclusive safety awareness program for public utility agencies like BBMP, BESCOM, BWSSB, BMRCL, RWAs & etc.  GAIL Gas with the help of various agencies has developed a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for laying of other utilities along Gas Pipelines and circulated to all utility agencies. The local police are also supporting GAIL Gas Limited in curbing unauthorised excavation along Pipelines. In order to sensitise public at large, company has also published Public Notices in number of popular News Papers about safety of Gas Pipeline. 

Explaining different operational CNG Stations, Shri Vivek Wathodkar said that operational CNG stations are located at Premnagar-Laggre; APC Circle- Jigani ; Hardware Park; Peenya; Sungadkatte; Bommasandara- Jigani link Road; ORR-Near Agara Lake and Tata Nagar. He added further that  12 CNG Stations will be added at majorly populated areas in the garden city i.e Airport Road; KR Puram; Goravigere; Sarjapur Road; Kateganahalli; Anekal; Doddaballapur Rd; Virupakshapura; Bommasandra; Bannerghatta Road; Magadi Road; Banashankari to further boost the network.

The company fitted CNG Cars from manufacturers like Maruti, Tata and Hyundai are also available in the City. Company has also partnered with the major OIL Marketing companies and is dispensing CNG from the Retail outlets of BPCL, IOCL and HPCL in the city. Company has also entered into strategic partnership with a ride sharing company to promote the usage of CNG in Bengaluru City.

On the Piped Natural Gas (PNG) front, GAIL Gas is supplying PNG to approximately 11, 634 Households at present  and approximately two lakh households have already completed  registration and PNG will be supplied after the expansion of the Network in these areas. The gasified areas include HSR Layout,  Singasandra, Mangamapalaya, Bellandur, Marathahalli, Whitefield: Garudacharpalaya, Kadugodi, Hagadur, Doddanekundi, Sanjay Nagar, Dollars colony- Radhakrishna temple ward, Nagawara,Thannisandra, Bytaranarayanapur, Peenya, Hoskote, Electronic city, Pipeline Road, HMT ward, Yeswanthpur, Central Manufacturing Technology Institute (CMTI), Tumkur Main Road, Yeshawanthpur Industrial Area, BEL Colony, BHEL, Malleshwaram, Bommasandra Jigani, Veerasandra, RAIL Wheel Factory, Yelahanka , Jindal Nature Cure, Jindal Factory and Colony, Tumkur Main Road.
