IIT Roorkee organized ‘International Conference on Future Cities’ from 11th to 13th December
11th December 2019, Roorkee: IIT Roorkee organized the ‘International Conference on Future Cities’ from 11th December to 13th December to explore the strategies for sustainable management of future settlements of urban areas. The Department of Architecture and Planning of IIT Roorkee along with the Institute of Spatial Planning and Environment research, Panchkula held this three-day conference to recognize the key research and knowledge gaps with regard to development of cities. The objective of this conference was to encourage research on future planning theories and findings in urban and rural development. The motto of this conference was to inspire global and regional research to shape the way for effective and inclusive urban practices. It also provided a platform for academicians, practitioners to integrate and learn from each other.
This conference was inaugurated by Mr. Kunal Kumar, IAS presently holds the position of Joint Secretary & Mission Director (Smart Cities Mission), Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India since May 2018. This international and interdisciplinary conference hosted city and regional governments, urban and rural planning professionals, policy-makers, representatives from academia, scientific bodies, research organizations, institutions, local bodies and agencies across the world.
This three-day conference majorly captured inauguration, interactive sessions and it is being followed by a valedictory session on 13th December. The conference provided a platform to hold poster and paper presentations simultaneously accommodating young professional students to be part of the larger conference format at the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee. The conference recognized the key research and knowledge gaps with regard to cities’ development. The discussion was focused on encouraging and instigating research on future planning theories and findings in urban and rural development.
Speaking on this occasion, Prof. Ajit K. Chaturvedi, Director, IIT Roorkee, added,” We are happy to host an International Conference on Future Cities which will address the complexity of planning for urban areas, specially in developing countries. It is heartening to see the enthusiastic response of professionals, academics and policy makers to this three day conference.”
