ISIC Makes a Foray into Indian Wheelchair Cricket Premiere League

New Delhi, 21st June 2018: Further strengthening the commitment to make a difference in the lives of people bound by wheelchair, the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre has purchased the franchise of Delhi Superstar wheelchair cricket team, which is one of the six participating cricket teams of 2018 Indian Wheel Chair Cricket Premiere League. Through this initiative ISIC is not only supporting 16 cricketers but also making a larger impact by associating with major event.

Organized bythe Wheelchair Talent Foundation in association with Disabled SupportingSociety, Agra, the Indian Wheel Chair Cricket Premiere League will commence onJune 20th till June 24th at Bal BhawanInternational School Ground in Dwarka. The event will see 6 wheelchair teamscontesting against each other and will have over 100 athletes playing cricketover the 4 days.

“Owning theDelhi team when the event is happening in Delhi is a special feeling. We arehappy that the team will receive a lot of home-support. However, the initiativeis directed towards encouraging the entire wheelchair sporting fraternity. As ahealthcare service provider which specializes in spinal injuries, we witnessclosely what a patient goes through when due to an injury the person is limitedto wheelchairs. Rehabilitating them to an independent state has been one of ourmajor challenges as well as major successes. Therefore, it gives uniquepleasure in supporting a team and an event like this. ” Dr. ChitraKataria, Chief of Rehabilitation Services, Indian Spinal Injuries Center(ISIC), New Delhi said.

India hasbeen playing wheelchair cricket for 10 years. From recreational activity to amajor goal of representing the country at International levels, thesedifferently abled athletes have found the meaning of life and motivationthrough cricket.

The eventwill commence with a road show followed by the opening ceremony on 20th June.The Road Show will begin from Ashoka Apartments Sector 12, Dwarka to the venue,which will be followed by the opening ceremony. A friendly match would beplayed between Delhi Police and Dwarka City team will mark the beginning of theevent. The league matches would continue from 21st June, with semi-finalmatches being held on 23rd June. The finals match is scheduled on 24th June,which would be followed by the closing ceremony.

“We deeplybelieve that sporting culture amongst specially abled people need to beencouraged in India. Not only these events give a meaning and purpose to theirlives but also provide avenues of earning livelihood. Apart from the medicaland rehabilitative assistance, it requires a tremendous mental strength andfaith on oneself to bounce back in life like these people and showcase talentslike none other”, said Dr. Chitra Kataria, Chief of RehabilitationServices, Indian Spinal Injuries Center (ISIC), New Delhi.

Star Indian cricketer, Virender Sehwag andNavjot Singh Siddhu, are among the patrons of this initiative, along the likesof Olympic medallist Shushil Kumar and former Parliamentarian, Shri Ajay Maken
