Next Tech Lab (SRM) Wins International QS Award

New feather wasadded to their hat recently when NextTech Lab from SRM University won a Silver Prize at the Reimagine educationawards 2018 organised by Quacquarelli Symonds and Wharton School of Business,University of Pennsylvania. The conference and awards took place at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown inPennsylvania, USA and the biggest names in education were in attendance.Quacquarelli Symonds, better known as QSis is famous for its annual publicationof international university rankings. SRM University (Now SRM Institute ofScience and Technology) currently holds a 4 star rating from QS. Next Tech Lab was awarded in the student-ledinnovation for spearheading student-ledcross-disciplinary research in India.Nominees for the awards included Massachusetts Institute ofTechnology, NationalUniversity of Singapore, Imperial College London and otherrenowneduniversities. The final nominees were selected from thousands ofentries worldwide and were invited to take part in the showcase pitch conductedat the conference. SRM University was the only Indian university reaching thefinale & bagging the esteemed accolade.

Next Tech Lab was founded by Anshuman Pandey and Aditthya Ramakrishnanwho spent a semester at MIT, Cambridge on a scholarship. Intrigued by theanti-disciplinary research culture of the MIT Media Lab, they decided to starta lab at their own university. Whencontacted, Dr. R.P. Sathyanarayanan,President SRM said, " Our students have made us proud once again,by being awarded with this prestigious award. SRM has always encouraged novelty& out of box thinking which has helped us maintain ourselves as frontrunners in technology. While Next Tech doesn’t just ape the Media Lab frameworklike in Richard Feynman’s anecdotes about “Cargo-Cult Science”, its policiesare built to foster innovation and disruptive thinking. Researchers work onDeep Learning/Artificial Intelligence, Computational Biology, ElectricalSystems, Mixed Reality, Blockchains/Decentralisation & Internet of Things."

The lab has advisorsfrom MIT, CMU, Cambridge University andsilicon-valley start-ups. Members of the lab often bag top research andindustry internships, win international Hackathons and present their researchat prestigious conferences. Next Tech Lab has locations in Kattankulathur, Tamil Nadu and Amaravati,Andhra Pradesh. NextTech Lab AP recently finished a project usingAugmented Reality to redefine the learning paradigmfor elementary schoolchildren. The apps are being deployed in schools to supplement regularclasses.Theconference was sponsored by Google, Microsoft, IBM, Amazon among other techgiants heavily invested in the education industry. The judging panel includedexecutives/CEOs and professors/ chancellors from Amazon, IBM, Wharton, QS, MIT,Columbia, and LSE.
