On World Kidney Day, Manipal Hospitals Champions the Cause
Bengaluru, March 07, 2017: In an endeavor to raise awareness for kidney related diseases and its importance on overall health, Manipal Hospitals Bangalore unveiled a campaign to champion the cause. In line with this year’s global theme, ‘Kidney disease and Obesity’ with a motto to follow ‘healthy lifestyle for healthy kidneys’. Theatre & Bollywood Actress Ms. Konkana Sen along with Ms. Malini Krishnamoorthy, IPS Additional Commissioner of Police , Bengaluru flagged off the campaign. The event was also attended by kidney transplant patients who shared their experiences of receiving a second chance to life.

Obesity is a growing worldwide epidemic and a significant risk factor for chronic kidney disease. This year World Kidney Day promotes education about the harmful consequences of obesity and its association with kidney disease. Hence, as a part of the campaign, Manipal Hospitals launched various packages for the benefit of kidney patients. 100 free consultations for patients with BMI above 30 was announced and free kidney screening for the Karnataka Police Force will also be facilitated. Additionally, preventive care and precautions needed for kidney health will be spread across the country.
Speaking on the occasion Theatre & Bollywood Actress Ms. Konkana Sen said, “It gives me immense pleasure to be here in Bengaluru and extend my support for the cause. The co-relation between kidney and obesity is very strong and this calls for instilling healthy lifestyle habits in our daily routine. We must together combat obesity which is also a root cause of many other diseases like blood pressure, heart ailments and diabetes in addition to kidney disease. I extend my whole hearted support to Manipal Hospitals and urge people to include exercise, healthy food habits and to curtail fat in their lives.”

In individuals affected byobesity, the kidneys have to work harder, filtering more blood than normal(hyperfiltration) to meet the metabolic demands of increased body weight andhence damage the kidneys in the long run . According toWHO, by 2025, obesity will affect 18% of men and over 21% of women worldwideand severe obesity will affect 6% of all men and 9% of all women around theworld. In some nations, obesity is already present in more than one-third ofthe adult population and contributes significantly to overall poor health andhigh annual medical costs.
