Sanjali Centre for Odissi Dance to present ‘Hansika’

Bangalore, March 26th 2018: Leading Odissi exponent Sharmila Mukerjee and her dance ensemble Sanjali will present ‘Hansika’ – the first Odissi adaptation of the widely acclaimed Russian Ballet ‘Swan Lake’ on Saturday, 31st March 2018 at Chowdiah Memorial Hall, Malleshwaram at 6.30PM.

With anensemble of 25 artistes, Hansika showcases a western classical theme through anIndian classical dance form. ‘Hansika’ presents a compelling tale of romanceand deception through an Odissi dance drama. It’s an intimate portrait of alove affair between Prince Siegfried and Odette, a princess turned into a swanby an evil sorceress. The graceful movements and elegant postures seen in theRussian ballet will be recreated in Hansika through fluidic Odissi movements. The sculpturesque poses and intricate footwork in Odissi lends itself naturallyinto the fabric of ballet. The stage design, costumes and the music has beenmeticulously created to capture the essence of the original composition. Musicfor Hansika has been composed by music director and composer Praveen D Rao

Known forher choice of fresh and unconventional themes, Hansika is yet anotherpioneering effort from Sharmila Mukerjee to  go beyond thetraditional repertoire. Her love for the offbeat is evident in her pastproductions that have beautifully portrayed distinctive themes through thethreads of Odissi. Her portrayal of ‘Kaikeyi’ in 2017 gave a new dimension toRamayana’s much maligned character and her production ‘Grishma Geetam’ forWorld Dance day portrayed the beauty of summer. Similarly, in 2016, SharmilaMukerjee’s ‘Sookshma’ had a social message about womanhood, nature and thecompelling need to respect both, alike. With every production, Sharmilahas explored narratives that go past the convention.  Through herchoice of unique themes,  versatile choreography and artisticpresentations, Sharmila has been instrumental in bringingOdissi to the forefront of performing arts scene in South India.
