Shri Jayakumar wins the prestigious V. Abdulla Remembrance Translation Award for the year 2018

Date: 3 July, 2018, Chennai: Shri K Jayakumar, IAS has won the prestigious V. Abdulla Remembrance Translation Award for the year 2018 for his translation from Malayalam of, “Selected Poems of O. N. V. Kurup”, published by Orient BlackSwan. The award ceremony was held at Chennai at the Asan Memorial School auditorium (Greams Road) on Saturday, 30 June 2018.

Shri Vaisakhan, President of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, presented the award citation and cash prize of Rs 25,000 to Shri K Jayakumar. In his special address, Shri Vaisakhan specifically drew attention to the contributions of Shri V. Abdulla to education within the Muslim community in Kerala and his contributions to the literary world as an editor-publisher and translator. 

Mrs Ummi Abdulla, wife of Late Shri V. Abdulla, and doyen of writing on Malabar cuisine thanked the jury for their selection.

Accepting the award Shri K Jayakumar elaborated on the difficult process of translating for contemporary audiences and dwelt upon the finer nuances of word choices to bring in the right mood in the text. Further,  he mentioned that every translator has to be completely devoted to the author of the original text, and that is how a good translation can be produced.
