The PoleStar Foundation announces the winners of 19th Annual PoleStar Awards
Chennai (India), 30th October 2017: The PoleStar Foundation, an independent Trust established in 1998 to recognize Excellence in IT in India, conducted the 19th Annual PoleStar Awards on the evening of 27th November 2017 at The Leela Palace, Chennai. The Chief Guest of the event wasMr. Azim Premji, Chairman, Wipro Limited. Mr. Arun Jain, Founder, PoleStar Foundation and Chairman & Managing Director, Intellect Design Arena Limited, was present at the event along with other eminent dignitaries from various industries, media and academia.
The Polestar Awards honour exemplary work in thefields of Journalism and Social Impact. In Journalism the categories includeBest Feature in IT Journalism, Best Feature in Business Journalism, Best GoodNews Feature (new addition) and The Jury’s Special Recognition. As promised byMr. Arun Jain in the previous year’s edition, a new genre of awards tocelebrate positive impact on the society were introduced this year – TheSocial Impact Awards in four categories: Education, Livelihood, Health andEmpowerment. The IT & Business journalism awards consist of a trophy, acitation and a cash prize of Rs. 2Lakh. The Jury’s Special Mention, Best Good News Feature and all fourSocial Impact awards include a trophy, a citation and a cash prize of Rs. 1 Lakh.

Mr. Azim Premji, Chairman,Wipro Limited, delivered the Keynote address on the importance of good educationin a public system. He said, “Goodeducation is about developing good human beings who are empowered to makeinformed and ethical decisions, and who grow into responsible and caringcitizens. And also Good Education is that which in its totality enables thedevelopment of our country into the great nation envisioned in ourconstitution.”
Adding further Mr. Premji said, “There are many actions that we need to takein school education on a sustained basis, but creating an empoweringenvironment for the teachers, is in my view the topmost priority. And this isbecause teachers are central to education and because no others actions canactually get implemented, unless teachers are enthusiastic allies of change.”
Speaking at the event, Arun Jain - Founder, PoleStar Foundation and Chairman, Intellect DesignArena Limited said, "Atthe PoleStar Foundation, we work towards identifying and honouring exemplarywork done in the fields of IT and Business Journalism. This year we havebroadened our focus by including two new categories, namely, Good News andSocial Impact. We want to recognise those at the forefront of deliveringsocially necessary news or in other words, impacting the lives of people in apossible manner. Journalists and Social Impact enablers are the realstorytellers, any recognisable work done in these fields deserve appreciationand support. We, as the people of this great nation, as entitled as we are, arealso responsible in pushing things forward. A small amount of individual effortthat we put in now, will yield a fruitful prospect in the comingyears.” This year, the Foundation received over 450nominations from journalists and social impact enablers across India. Theentries were evaluated by a panel of jurors comprising of esteemed jury membersfrom the corporate world and academia selected the winners in all categories ofJournalism and Social Impact. The awards ceremony witnessed eminent mediapersonalities, leaders from the Industry and students from Journalism andSocial Work schools in Chennai.
