Two young achievers from Karnataka win ‘YONO SBI 20 Under Twenty’ awards
Bengaluru – February 07, 2019: State Bank of India, country’s largest lender celebrated the talent of young superstars who are transforming society with their skills and expertise with ‘YONO SBI 20 Under Twenty’ awards. Two great young talents – 16 years old Nikhiya Shamsher – Philanthropist & budding entrepreneur, and 12 years old Hima Srushti –Bharatnatyam Dancer, from Karnataka emerged winners of this title.
At the age of 13, Nikhiya started an NGO and has since then set up 106 'Yearn to Learn' laboratories of Science and Math in schools and colleges that don't have them. As a budding entrepreneur, she started www.knicnacs.com to sell quirky and unique gifts which helped fund her projects. Apart from the labs, in the last three years about 10,500 students have received school supplies through her activity 'Bags, Books and Blessings'. For her unique initiatives, Nikhiya has been honoured with 'National Child Award for Exceptional Achievement 2017' presented by the Hon’ble President of India and some of the other most prestigious awards. Nikhiya has authored a book propagating the value of education called ‘The Secret of Ada’s Wisdom’.
Hima is a popular trained Bharatanatyam dancer. She was born with hearing loss and speech disability. Her grandparents took her to a speech therapy centre when she was just 8 months old, where she learnt how to communicate through sign language and lip movements. After being rejected by a couple of schools, she was enrolled at Aditi Public School in Uttarahalli and introduced to dance classes. She’s flourished into a fine dancer, cleared the first round of her dance examination and performed in about 10 shows, some at Ravindra Kalakshetra. Not only can Hima hear but she also speaks fluent Kannada and English and has mastered sign language.
The winners were chosen through public voting that counted to more than 1.7 lakh in 10 diverse categories such as sustainability, performing arts, acting, entrepreneurship or innovation, sports, global Indian, disability champion among others. The nominations were shortlisted by an esteemed jury panel of 8 eminent personalities including bollywood actress Dia Mirza, Sports journalist and author Boria Majumdar, Sashi Sreedharan, MD, Microsoft India, Dilip Asbe, MD & CEO, NPCI, Mallika Dua, Social Media Influencer, among others.
