Awaki Opens in Bengaluru, Bringing Japan’s Matcha Culture and Contemporary Japanese Cuisine to the Heart of the City

Awaki Opens in Bengaluru Matcha Culture Meets Contemporary Japanese Cuisine - thisweekindia

BENGALURU, 14 July 2026 – House of Awaki has officially opened its doors in Kalyan Nagar, introducing Bengaluru to an authentic, contemporary Japanese tea house experience. Moving beyond the conventional café format, the intimate 30–35-seater destination blends premium ceremonial Matcha, specialty Japanese teas, and innovative beverages with an ingredient-led menu designed to celebrate the rich heritage of Japanese tea culture.

The name Awaki seamlessly fuses the concept of being “awake” with Ki—the Japanese philosophy of life force and energy—reflecting the brand’s core commitment to mindful hospitality and intentional living.

At the heart of the experience is one of India’s most meticulous Japanese tea selections. House of Awaki showcases six distinct ceremonial Matcha cultivars—Ren, Kiyone, Takara, Ajisai, Bara, and Yuri—sourced directly from Japan’s premier tea-growing regions, including Mie, Uji, Yame, and Kagoshima.

The exploration continues with three signature Houjicha varieties (Akane, Hibisu, and Tsubaki), alongside traditional favorites like Genmaicha and Rikka. Pushing the boundaries of flavor, the beverage menu also features contemporary creations such as Miso Cookie Caramel Matcha, Pandan Palm Candy, Milo Akane, and Coco Matcha Float.

An Ingredient-Led Culinary Experience

Complementing the beverage program is a curated menu of around 20 contemporary, Japanese-inspired dishes. Conceptualized by Le Cordon Bleu alumna and Consulting Chef Mathangi Kumar, the culinary philosophy focuses on harmony and balance.

“The menu has been designed around the tea rather than alongside it,” says Chef Kumar. “Every dish has been carefully created to complement the flavor profiles of the teas, resulting in an experience that is balanced, approachable, and true to Japanese culinary philosophy.”

Signature offerings include Ponzu Prawn Inari, Chicken Karaage, Kale Tempura, and Kimchi Udon. For dessert, the tea-centric narrative continues with a decadent Matcha Basque Cheesecake and Mocha Babka Toast.

Founder Pranav Praburam envisioned House of Awaki after traveling to Malaysia, where he studied under practitioners who treated Matcha as an intricate craft rather than a passing trend.

“House of Awaki was created to introduce India to the depth and diversity of Japanese tea culture,” Praburam shares. “We wanted to create a space where every tea has a story, every cup reflects craftsmanship, and every guest leaves with a deeper appreciation of Japanese tea.”

This launch marks the first step in a broader vision to foster a community around Japanese tea through immersive workshops, premium retail products, and ready-to-drink innovations.
