Lisa Rani Ray believes in serendipity, though she prefers to think of it as “life expressing itself”. The accidental actor, cancer “graduate” and mother of multiples believes in seeking delight in every day, no matter how challenging the circumstances. In an interview in the June issue of Femina, she speaks candidly of her start as a model, finding her feet in Bollywood, fighting cancer, and her dreams of going back fully to writing. The feature also offers insights into her battle with bulimia, her fascination with the Beatles, (and her plans to marry John Lennon), and why she’s looking forward to a new destination to live in.
Lisa also talks about being a mom to twin daughters, her fulfilling relationship with her husband, and how she has learned how important self-care is. “Growing into motherhood has been an incredible process of reclaiming the meaning of home and repairing the faultiness of identity,” she says. “Kids don’t need a perfect mom, they need a happy mom, so I don’t feel guilty about checking into a hotel to think and be alone.”
A self-proclaimed “cancer graduate”, Lisa touches upon her 12-year journey of living with cancer. “Getting diagnosed with multiple myeloma, which is essentially an incurable cancer, could have disfigured my life with fear. I leaned into the fear. I never wake up with the realisation that I am living with a serious disease; I wake up with gratitude. In the back of my mind, I get a kick out of defying the statistics,” she says.
