Gives a new lease of life to Rosy Mery, an 18-Year-Old Girl Battling Acute Pancreatitis
Bengaluru, 11th August 2023: SPARSH Foundation, in collaboration with Dream India Network (DIN), successfully treated and saved the life of Rosy Mery, an 18-year-old girl suffering from acute pancreatitis. In light of her financial constraints and critical condition, SPARSH Foundation provided her with life-saving treatment and the financial support for the treatment.
Rosy Mery, who tragically lost her parents at a young age, grew up under the compassionate care of nuns at an orphanage. The hostel provided her with access to education, allowing her to complete her high school studies. Currently, Rosy is enrolled in a college in Basavangudi, where she is pursuing a degree in History, Economics, Political Science, and Sociology. With aspirations to explore a career in hotel management or become a beautician, Rosy turned 19 in June 2023.
From a very young age, Rosy has had constant and severe episodes of stomach pain. These debilitating episodes stopped her from doing her daily activities, sometimes even preventing her from writing tests and exams. Initially attributing the pain to gastrointestinal issues, Rosy sought medical advice from many doctors in smaller clinics and hospitals. However, as the intensity of her pain escalated, her caretaker suggested a scan to find out the root cause. The scan revealed that Rosy was suffering from Acute Pancreatitis, a condition in which the pancreas becomes inflamed over a short period of time.
All efforts and consultations with multiple doctors, as well as numerous hospital admissions failed to improve Rosy’s condition. This caused considerable financial strain. Recognizing the severity of her condition, Rosy’s caretaker at the hostel, along with Father Edward from her church, recommended seeking further treatment at SPARSH Hospital.
In February 2023, Rosy was brought to the emergency department at SPARSH Hospital, RR Nagar, in an unconscious state. Under the guidance of Dr Devendra Naik, a team of medical professionals swiftly stabilised her condition and quickly started her treatment. Considering Rosy’s physical health and the acuteness of the condition, there was an immediate need to start treatment. However, Rosy’s financial aspect became a barrier. Adhering to SPARSH Hospital group’s ideology of not denying treatment based on financial grounds, SPARSH Foundation, in collaboration with Dream India Network, stepped in to save Rosy’s life.
Rosy underwent an extensive 8-hour procedure which was led by Dr. Pranav Honnavara Srinivasan, a Consultant Gastrointestinal Surgeon. The administration of anaesthesia for a critical procedure such as this requires extreme precision, and Dr. Lokesh and Dr. Nutan, Consultant Anesthesiologists, ensured a successful and seamless procedure. Dr. Rajani Bhat, the pulmonologist, efficiently oversaw Rosy’s rehabilitation, focusing on improving her lung function through appropriate nutrition, diet plans, and exercises.
Rosy’s condition improved and she was transferred to the ward. With aspirations of becoming a beautician or a hotel management graduate, Rosy continued to study for her 2nd PUC exams during her recovery. A few weeks later, Rosy was discharged and she has been visiting SPARSH regularly for her follow up consultations.
Antra Bhargava, Executive Committee Member, SPARSH Foundation, said, “ At SPARSH, we believe that every individual should have easy access to quality healthcare, regardless of one’s financial standing. Our foundation stands as a symbol of Faith, Hope, and Love, dedicated to creating a positive impact on the lives of those in need. We are thrilled to see Rosy recover under the exceptional care provided by our team of doctors and nurses at SPARSH Hospital.
