BENGALURU, India – July 2, 2024. Samsung’s R&D center in Bangalore, India (SRI-B) played a key role in making Galaxy AI more accessible to a wider audience. They collaborated with global teams to develop AI language models for several languages, including English (multiple dialects), Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, and most notably, Hindi.
Adding Hindi support to Galaxy AI proved to be a complex task. The SRI-B team had to account for over 20 regional dialects, including their unique tones, punctuation, and slang. To address this challenge, they trained the AI model on a massive dataset of speech recordings, combining both translated and transliterated data to handle the frequent mixing of Hindi and English.
SRI-B also partnered with Indian universities like the Vellore Institute of Technology to gather this crucial data. This collaboration ensured the AI model accurately reflected the nuances of spoken Hindi across different regions.
Thanks to these efforts, Galaxy AI now supports 16 languages. This allows users to translate languages offline through features like Live Translate, Interpreter, Note Assist, and Browsing Assist.
This project exemplifies Samsung’s commitment to open collaboration. SRI-B not only partnered with academic institutions but also shared knowledge and expertise with other Samsung research centers worldwide.
“We are incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished with our partners,” said Giridhar Jakki, Head of Language AI at SRI-B. “Collaboration is key to driving innovation in AI. We’ll keep working to improve our understanding of languages and gather high-quality data to make AI tools more accessible in the future.”
