Bengaluru, May 4: In the latest report by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) data the unemployment rate in India increased by 7.83% compared to 7.60% in March. The biggest crunch was seen in urban areas where the unemployment rate was 9.22% compared to 8.28% in March. However, the rural areas saw a decline in the unemployment rate, 7.18% in April compared to 7.29 the previous month.
The state-wise data provided by the CMIE shows that the worst affected state by unemployment is Haryana at 34.5%, followed by Rajasthan at 28.8% and 21.1% in the state of Bihar. The states that showed the lowest unemployment rate were Himachal Pradesh at 0.2%, Chhattisgarh at 0.6%, and Assam at 1.2%.
Experts are saying inflation, pay cuts, and pandemics have played a major role in the crisis. In March, CPI (consumer price index) inflation rose to a 17-month high of 6.95%. According to the CMIE report released last month, India’s labour workforce fell by 38 lakhs in March.
According to 2021 data from the World Bank, only 43% of India’s working-age population has a job. The number is lower than India’s neighboring countries like Bangladesh at 54% and Pakistan at 48%.
Taking a jibe at the BJP government, Rahul Gandhi the leader of the opposition tweeted, “Power Crisis, Jobs Crisis, Farmer Crisis, Inflation Crisis. PM Modi’s 8-years of misgovernance is a case study on how to ruin what was once one of the world’s fastest growing economies.”
