Minister Gundu Rao Signs MoU for 'Swastha Mysuru' Initiative - thisweekindia

Mysuru is taking a major step towards promoting healthy living and preventing Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) with the official launch of the “Swastha Mysuru” initiative. The campaign is a collaborative effort, sealed by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the Karnataka Health Department and implemented in partnership with the HH Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar Foundation and the Health World India Trust.

The MoU signing ceremony took place at the Wadiyar Centre for Architecture in the presence of Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao.

Minister’s Endorsement and Government Support

Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao commended the initiative, noting its continuation from a successful similar program implemented by Health World in Bengaluru. “The Mysuru chapter under the banner ‘Swastha Mysuru’ is a commendable continuation,” he stated. He emphasized the Health Department’s commitment to supporting the campaign, with the goal of significantly enhancing the health and lifestyle of Mysuru citizens over the next two years.

The Minister also highlighted the state government’s existing efforts through the “Gruha Arogya” programme, which provides free screening for individuals above 30 years for diabetes, hypertension, select cancers, and 14 other NCDs, along with free medicines. “Over one crore people have already been screened,” he confirmed. Stressing the fundamental importance of health and education, he called for public support and collaboration from socially driven organizations. He also advised citizens to adopt healthy diets and avoid junk food.

Campaign Focus and Goals

Pramoda Devi Wadiyar, Chairperson of the HH Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar Foundation, addressed the gathering, confirming that the Mysuru program will build on the success of the ‘Healthy Bengaluru’ initiative by specifically focusing on raising awareness about NCDs.

Nalini Saligram, Founder of Health World, underscored the urgency of the matter, warning that nearly 80% of people suffer from diabetes or heart-related issues, and 40% face cancer risks. “If we do not act now, these non-communicable diseases may lead to a major crisis in the future,” she cautioned.

Under the “Swastha Mysuru” initiative, 15 diverse organizations—including companies, hospitals, government bodies, and civil society groups—have pledged to work together for a healthier Mysuru over the next two years.

The campaign aims to:

  • Increase NCD screening.
  • Encourage physical activity.
  • Improve healthy eating habits.
  • Enhance mental health awareness.
  • Strengthen adolescent health care.

This ongoing health initiative, active since 2022, has already impacted over one million people across the state.
