BENGALURU 11 July 2026. The Bengaluru Urban District Union of Working Journalist (BUWJ), wing of Karnataka Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ), celebrated Journalists’ Day with a grand event at the Sri Adichunchanagiri Convention Hall in Vijayanagar.
The convention was jointly chaired by KUWJ State President Mr. Shivanand Tagadu and BUWJ President Mr. Somashekar Gandhi, alongside state and district office bearers and a large gathering of senior media professionals.
The event was formally inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Railways and Jal Shakti, V. Somanna (Member of Parliament), and Karnataka State Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, among other eminent political and community leaders.
At the inauguration, Senior Congress Leader Ramalinga Reddy praised the dedication of the journalistic community, highlighting its vital role in delivering accurate and truthful information to the public. He noted that working journalists serve as a crucial bridge between citizens and the government to uphold democratic values. Additionally, Minister Reddy urged members of the Bengaluru Urban Working Journalists Association (BUWJ) to help identify a suitable plot of land in Bengaluru for their new office, promising to discuss the matter with the Chief Minister once a location is found.
While Union Minister V. Somanna briefly visited and highlighted the evolving dynamics of media in the digital era. He praised the dedication of regional and grassroots journalists who work tirelessly to bring public issues to light, ensuring that the voice of the community reaches the highest levels of policy-making.
As part of the celebrations, several veteran and senior journalists were felicitated by the chief guests in recognition of their decades of stellar contribution, ethical reporting, and resilience in the field of journalism. The event concluded with a strong call to protect the welfare of working journalists and maintain the high standards of the fourth estate.
Speaking at the Journalist Day celebrations, Karnataka Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) President Shivananda Tagadur emphasized the vital importance of unity within the fraternity. He urged senior leaders to remain accessible and guide members effectively. Highlighting infrastructure goals, Tagadur announced plans to identify a suitable location for a modern, corporate-style union office equipped with all essential amenities, seeking corporate partnerships for its construction. Furthermore, he cautioned members against being misled by unrecognized organizations formed out of vested interests. Paying tribute to the legendary visionary and icon Dr. D.V. Gundappa (DVG), he called on journalists to follow in DVG’s footsteps, maintain solidarity, and dedicate themselves to producing high-quality content and congratulated all the awardees and the members in making the celebration meaningful.
