In a remarkable feat of environmental rejuvenation, Vijayapura, Karnataka, once plagued by arid conditions, has undergone a stunning transformation into a verdant paradise. Spearheaded by the ‘Koti Vruksha Abhiyana’ initiative led by the esteemed Minister M B Patil of the Ministry of Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure, this massive plantation drive has seen the successful planting of 1.30 crore trees since its inception in 2015.
The initiative, a collaborative effort between local forest departments, NGOs, and dedicated farmers, aims not only to revive the district’s once-barren landscape but also to empower local communities through sustainable farming practices. Farmers are incentivized to participate through the distribution of saplings at highly subsidized rates, encouraging widespread cultivation and fostering a culture of environmental stewardship.
During the fiscal year 2021-22 alone, the Koti Vruksha Abhiyan achieved its ambitious goal of planting one crore trees, covering vast expanses of land totaling 5,000 hectares across the district. Noteworthy is the creation of one of the largest urban forest plantations on the outskirts of Vijayapura, spanning over 600 acres and hosting over 60,000 saplings.
Hon’ble Minister M B Patil expressed his appreciation for the collaborative efforts that have made the project possible, emphasizing the importance of sustainable planting techniques such as solar-driven drip irrigation. Looking ahead, the project aims to expand its impact with a second phase targeting the planting of an additional 2 crore trees.
Partnering NGOs like the Society for Protection of Plants and Animals (SPPA) have played a vital role in raising awareness and engaging local communities in the initiative. Through educational campaigns and activities, such as bird feeder construction, they have inspired over 8,000 rural students to actively participate in the cause.
The impact of the plantation drive is already evident, with the district’s forest cover witnessing a significant increase from 0.17% to 0.24%. Wildlife enthusiasts have documented over 185 species of birds inhabiting the newly established forests, which also serve as crucial habitats for migratory species. Moreover, the plantations have contributed to a noticeable reduction in temperatures, providing relief from the scorching heat.
Surpassing the milestone of 1.30 crore trees planted, the Koti Vruksha Abhiyan stands as a testament to determination and perseverance in the face of environmental challenges. With plans to plant another 2 crore trees by 2025, the initiative is poised to continue its legacy of fostering a flourishing green revolution, setting an example for sustainable development nationwide.
