Ramaiah Memorial Hospital Becomes Only Second in India to Achieve Prestigious FACT Accreditation

Ramaiah Memorial Becomes India’s Second FACT-Accredited Hospital - thisweekindia

BENGALURU, INDIA February 18, 2026 — Ramaiah Memorial Hospital (RMH) has announced its accreditation by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT), marking a historic milestone for Indian healthcare. RMH is now one of only two hospitals in India to hold this distinction and the only hospital in the country to simultaneously hold both FACT and Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditations.

Elevating the Gold Standard in Cellular Therapy

FACT accreditation is globally recognized as the most rigorous authority for quality and safety in bone marrow transplantation (BMT) and cellular therapy. Unlike standard hospital certifications, FACT evaluates the entire transplant ecosystem, including:

  • Donor Safety: Stringent protocols to protect those providing stem cells.
  • Cell Processing: Advanced standards for handling and storing hematopoietic cells.
  • Clinical Outcomes: Continuous monitoring of long-term patient recovery and survival.
  • Systemic Discipline: Eliminating “system gaps” to ensure proactive complication management.

Dr. M. R. Jayaram, Chairman of Gokula Education Foundation (Medical), emphasized that the achievement validates the hospital’s commitment to governance-driven, patient-centric care. “This milestone ensures that patients in India receive care aligned with the world’s best,” he stated, acknowledging the vital mentorship provided by the University of Illinois in reaching this goal.

Addressing India’s Growing Health Burden

The timing of this accreditation is critical. According to GLOBOCAN 2022, India sees a blood cancer diagnosis every five minutes, with over 120,000 new cases annually. Furthermore, India carries the world’s highest burden of thalassemia, for which BMT is the only curative treatment.

While Bengaluru serves as a major referral hub, many eligible patients do not undergo transplantation due to concerns regarding donor availability and clinical safety. Dr. Nagendra Swamy S. C., Chief Executive of RMH, noted that the FACT accreditation builds essential trust. “India’s growing cancer burden demands more than just capacity—it demands proven outcomes,” he said.

A Future-Ready Healthcare Ecosystem

The accreditation was achieved with the academic guidance of Professor Dr. Damiano Rondelli, President of the Worldwide Network for Blood and Marrow Transplantation. Dr. Santosh K. Devadas, HOD of Medical Oncology and Hematology at RMH, highlighted that the FACT framework directly improves survival rates by enforcing safe cell handling and continuous quality improvement.

By securing this accreditation, RMH solidifies its position as a leader in hematology, ensuring that the 1,000+ patients evaluated annually at the center have access to globally benchmarked, outcome-driven cellular therapies.
